Surrealism Realism : A step-by-step guide to Imaginative Painting
Surrealism Realism
A masterclass in imaginative painting and original composition
We all started out drawing the same way: a few pencils, our imagination and no inhibitions.
Yet somewhere along the way things became more…complicated
Imaginative Painting is about returning to that childlike freedom, empowered by the technical mastery of an adult.
You have sketchbooks full of ideas. But finishing a painting feels like a completely different skill.
You can draw, but your sketchbooks are completely empty. Somewhere along the way you lost touch with your creative spark.
You start with enthusiasm and somewhere in the middle, it falls apart.
You do studies. You copy masters. But you rarely commit to original work.
You are interested in trying oil painting. but feel overwhelmed by the broad range of possible techniques.
You have images in your head you've never successfully gotten onto canvas.
Any of these sound familiar?
I designed this course for you. Fundamentally it is about getting your technical skills and your innate creativity talking to each other again.
Why Learn From Me?
I started out as an obsessed teenager during the golden age of online forums, learning from concept artists and illustrators whose entire focus was drawing from imagination. Later I studied and then spent seven years teaching at the Swedish Academy of Realist Art, where I fell in love with the discipline of classical technique.
What I make now is a mashup of those two worlds. This course lays out the method I actually use in my own studio — developing original images from a blank page, and often a blank mind.
The most exciting thing is when you surprise yourself. One thing I love to hear from students in workshops is: "I didn't realize I had this drawing waiting to come out."

FAQ

Part of my premise is that I want to offer a workflow that I believe would help anybody create the best painting they can at this particular moment. So in that vein I believe it is useful to beginners.
However if you asked who is the ideal student, it would be advanced beginners and intermediate students. Those of you with some background in drawing and painting looking for a way to level up your work.
-
Yes, they will always be available to stream on demand on my website. In the case of some kind of unforeseen issue with hosting a google drive will be made available for a period of time.

In the full bundle I provide a detailed pdf with my written thoughts about painting surfaces, oil paint brands, brushes etc. I am presuming that you can set yourself up with a surface (canvas or board) to work on, and have a space to paint. An entire masterclass could be made on stretching canvas alone, so in order to limit the creeping scope of this project I assume some basic materials knowledge. There are already free tutorials on youtube from museum staff on stretching canvas, don’t let it hold you back from taking part!
Further materials questions can be asked in the discord, together we are going to build out the knowledge archive

While the course is documenting the creation of an oil painting, I believe that 80% of the course contents are applicable to any other medium.
The chapters on brainstorming and developing sketches, the art theory on values, on colour, edges, composition etc., all of that is universal to every medium. The only part that is explicitly designed for oils is the actual underpainting—>glazing—>finishing workflow. That said, 100% clarity, there is a lot of focus on the medium of oil painting, ultimately that is what this particular course is documenting.
It is my belief that you would still be able to derive a lot of value from this course if you like the kind of imaginative surreal work I make, even if you never planned on touching oil painting and you would be more than welcome in the guild halls. -
I think so! I actually learnt to paint digitally first. All of the underlying fundamentals are the same. One of the biggest challenges with digital work actually comes from the infinite flexibility. The knowledge that you can tinker with things forever can make it harder to commit to a composition. I found that learning to work in traditional media and letting go of the undo key forced me to plan ahead better and actually made me a more confident digital painter.
-
It totally depends on the scope of the painting you choose to make and your current ability level and how much time you have to dedicate to art practice. I spend anywhere from 10-50+ hours on each painting, which usually works out at 1-4 weeks of studio time.

Each video will stream in beautiful 1080p HD video from a reliable backend service called Bunny.net . They ensure fast delivery globally, contact me if you are having issues.
